The framework of action of the Institute is summarized in the following axes:
- Combining Research and Innovation with Regional Development and attraction of investments
- Achieving scientific excellence through conducting high-quality research
- Interconnection and operational cooperation with Greek and international industry
- Opening up to the world through collaborations with Research Centers and Universities in Greece and abroad
The Institute, responding to contemporary European technological challenges in the Energy and Environment Sector, focuses on new interdisciplinary directions of significant scientific, social, and economic interest and high added value, aiming to:
- Develop new energy technologies and energy production systems, with an emphasis on flexible production and renewable energy sources (RES)
- Develop modern environmental technologies to primarily reduce industrial carbon footprints
- Utilize green alternative fuels and optimize production processes
- Energy saving, circular economy, and industrial coexistence
- Contribute to addressing the impacts of climate change
- Develop smart energy networks focusing on interoperability, big data usage, increased monitoring, and communication
- Nodes of autonomous energy systems at various levels (nano-networks at the building level, micro-networks, etc.) that can operate both as part of a large interconnected system or energy community and autonomously
- Optimal introduction of energy storage systems of various technologies and hybrid systems into energy grids
- Develop innovative materials, new products, and services
- Optimal strategic energy planning for the region and the country
- Design, development, and implementation of innovative energy management solutions
- Modeling and monitoring of energy markets with an emphasis on the systems of Southeast Europe
- Develop fully interconnected energy systems with networks of multiple energy operators, using storage (power-to-X) of large quantities, and high penetration of RES.
